Who are we? Northern Michigan University Sailing Team is a co-ed, student-run, competitive club team! We practice on the great Lake Superior and travel around the Midwest competing in regattas. Do you have to have experience before joining? No; you can have never seen a body of water in your life before or be an experienced instructor. Either way, we would love for you to join our team!
Where do we sail? We sail inside the break wall on the lower harbor (See Map Below). Marquette Yacht Club 201 E Main St, Marquette, Michigan 49855
What is a regatta? A regatta is a fancy word for a sailing competition. We have competitions every weekend. However most students only attend one or two a year. We leave Friday, sail throughout Saturday and part of Sunday, and return to Marquette late Sunday night. Regattas are mostly covered by your yearly fee, but could cost $20 for gas.
Do I have to attend regattas? No. Attending regattas is encouraged, but completely optional. You can still be a member and only attend practices. There will be a participant fee drop if you only want to attend practices, and not regattas.
When is practice? TBD. Attendance is highly encouraged! The only way to become a better sailor is through practice. The fall season begins with the start of the school year and ends early November when the temperatures hit freezing. Practice resumes in the spring, as soon as the ice breaks.
How much are dues? Dues vary each year, but generally range about $150. These costs cover Marquette Yacht Club membership, regatta fees, boat maintenance, MCSA dues and dock usage. If you only want to attend practice and not regattas, this fee will be lowered. Members are also required to purchase a PEIF pass for the year.
Do I need to supply my own gear? No! All gear (PFD, drysuit) is supplied by the club. If you are interested in buying your own gear, Helly Hansel, Gill or line honors are great sailing companies!
How do I stay informed on the team's happenings? Make sure to stay in touch through the emails or group chats created at the beginning of each season. We try hosting at least one meeting a month, be sure to go. That would be the best way to stay involved on the new happenings of the team!
What do we sail? 420s and FJs-Flying Juniors (See Diagrams Below).
